The Next Big Thing for Global Yacht Racing - The RORC Madeira Race

(PRWEB) February 21, 2008 -- Global Yacht Racing have taken part in some fantastic challenges over the last couple or years. In 2006 it was the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race, a 1600 mile race around the British Isles, in 2007 it was the Epic Rolex Middle Sea Race which saw some of the wildest weather that part of the Med has ever seen. They have also competed in four Rolex Sydney to Hobart races with amateur crews. So they are definitely up for the next big sailing challenge which RORC have recently unveiled, the Madeira Race 2008.

This 2600 nautical mile race is going to start and finish in Cowes and race down to the Island of Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean. The race is split into two legs; outbound and return, and crew changes are allowed. The race from Cowes to Madeira is due to start on the 11th of August and the race back from Madeira will leave on the 26th of August.

The tough racecourse will take racers west through the English Channel, past the Channel Islands and the French coast and out into the notorious Bay of Biscay then into the Atlantic Ocean heading south down the Spanish and Portuguese coast, and continuing south down the African coast to the Portuguese Island of Madeira.

It is bound to be a tough event given the different regions and seas that the crew will sail, the Bay of Biscay crossing is not for the fainthearted and the passage could take up to ten days of Atlantic sailing as the crews race south after clearing Ushant.

Global Yacht Racing will be training novice crews for this event, with a season of RORC races, race training and safety and sea survival training. This provides people with a passion for adventure the opportunity to compete in the sailing challenge of 2008 regardless of their previous sailing experience. Many non-professional amateur crews have competed with the UK based company in exciting and challenging ocean and offshore races such as the Rolex Fastnet Race, the Rolex Sydney to Hobart Race, Round Britain and Ireland Race and the Middle Sea Race. The ethos behind the company is that yacht racing should be accessible to anyone with determination and a reasonable level of fitness and with the correct training and excellent instruction can compete succesfully against seasoned racers.

Global Yacht Racing will run two campaigns for the event, the first will be the full campaign with training and qualifying RORC races and the full race to Madeira and back. The second campaign will involve the full training package and RORC qualifying races but just one leg either to or from Madeira.
